How to Achieve a Goal

1. Be clear. Take the time to clarify exactly what you wish to accomplish. Write down what you want to do and why. Doing this one step can save countless hours of false starts and revisions.

2. Outline the steps you need to take. A large goal with vague steps will be elusive, but if you break your goal into individual tasks, you'll know where to begin and you'll know what's next. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!

3. Know which parts you can do yourself and which parts require help. No one can do everything - each of us has specific strengths, and conversely, we each have our weaknesses. If you try to do what you do not do well, you are likely to set yourself up to fail. Get help where you need it.

4. Get support only from those who are truly supportive. It's easy to find critics, and they sap energy. Avoid them at all costs, and get support from those who know how to give it freely.

5. Manage your time. It's important to prioritize, to stick to the commitments you make to yourself, to say no to time-wasters (either people or other distractions), and to know how to make the time without setting yourself up for overload.
